UtopianismcontributedtotheformationoftheChinesestateitself—shapingthethoughtofkeyfiguresofthelateQingandearlyRepublicanerassuchasKangYouweiandSunYat-sen—andoutlivedthelabyrinthinedebatesofthesecondhalveofthetwentiethcentury,bothunderMao’sruleandduringthepost-socialistera.Eveninthecurrenttimesofdystopiannarratives,aperiodinwhichutopiaseemstobelessinfluentialthaninthepast,itsmanifestationspersistentlyprovidelifelinesagainstfatalismorcynicism.Thiscollectionshowshowprofoundlyutopianideashavenurturedboththethoughtofcrucialfiguresduringthesehistoricaltimes,thenewgenerationofmainlandChineseandSinophoneintellectuals,andthehopesoftwenty-first-centuryHongKongactivists.
